Overview:

Step into the ancient world of traditional archery in a stunning ocean-side setting.

This is more than just a bow and arrows lesson, it's an exploration of our human nature, mindfulness, and the wisdom of our ancestors. Begin with an introduction to shooting a traditional bow and arrow while the host, Lance Bishop, guides you through the focus and discipline needed to hone your aim. Learn how this ancient practice fosters clarity and calm, as well as how it provides the opportunity for a deeper connection to yourself and the natural world.

Once your technique is sharpened, the adventure shifts to an exhilarating mock hunt. You'll embark as a member of a hunting party on a quest to seek out an animal of the past—a symbolic echo of the animals once hunted by those who lived here.

  • To engage the public in helping to protect the forests, in keeping with the Government of Nova Scotia’s commitment to protect 20% of Nova Scotia’s lands and waters by 2030.
  • To raise awareness of the ecological importance of protecting forests over 80 years old, in particular.

Lance Bishop

Lance grew up on his family’s shoreside farm in Baxter's Harbour, NS. He was given a traditional bow by his older brother at the age of five. Almost five decades later he’s still honing his archery skills in the same beautiful place.

Lance and his partner Sarah operate Wild Mountain Adventures, a haven for outdoor pursuits designed to reconnect people with their ancestral ties to the Earth. These immersive, educational experiences in nature center on farm animals, horses, traditional archery, and horseback archery, offering a unique exploration of our place in the natural world—past and present.

Guided by a common vision, these activities encourage participants to reflect on their relationship with nature and their role within it. The ultimate mission is to cultivate a deeper understanding of, and appreciation for, the natural world to the depth of inspiring regenerative life choices and practices where possible, that honour our interdependence with the Earth.

For Lance, the bow and arrow are more than recreational equipment or hunting tools—they're teachers, and their most important lessons are about life itself!  Almost every aspect of Lance’s story and his view on the world has been shaped by archery.  His greatest archery expression may be in his journey as an influential teacher and athlete in the ancient art and modern sport of horseback archery, in which Lance has become a top competitor in North America.
